CovidPredict: central national patient database

The corona virus has resulted in an enormous pressure on Dutch healthcare, and particularly on Intensive Care Units (ICUs). It is therefore of paramount importance that the care given to COVID-19 patients is optimal and efficient. For this reason, it is crucial to learn as quickly and as much as possible from COVID-19 patients that have already been admitted to Dutch hospitals. By collecting and analyzing data from these patients, we can better understand the disease and help determine who should receive which treatment and care and when.

National cooperation

In collaboration with the Dutch Association for Intensive Care and the National Intensive Care Evaluation Foundation (NICE), doctors and researchers from Amsterdam UMC and Maastricht UMC+ started a consortium to centralize the collection of data of COVID-19 patients.

The consortium has grown rapidly since the start of the project, with numerous new hospitals, clinicians, and researchers joining the team every week. Because of this, the size of the available data has been growing quickly. On the Collaborators page you will be able to find a list of the participating organizations. More information about the progress can also be found at Progress and news.

Goal and projects

The collaboration aims to directly support physicians involved in the treatment of COVID-19 patients with insights and predictions based on advanced analytical techniques applied on the gathered data.

The consortium is leading two projects:

  • COVID-19 ICU Decision Support: collection and analysis of data of patients with COVID-19 who are admitted to the ICU.  This data is collected routinely from Electronic Health Records (EHRs) in an automatic fashion, so that physicians in the frontline of COVID-19 care are not burdened.
  • COVID-19 Clinical Course: collection and analysis of data of patients with COVID-19 in any hospital department. This data is being collected through the appointed form provided by the World Health Organization (WHO). This data is being collected by physicians and researchers not directly involved in the COVID-19 patient care, so that physicians in the frontline of COVID-19 care are not burdened.

Read more about the projects on the Goal and projects page.

Benefits of participation

Participating hospitals will have access to the database and the resulting insights gained by experienced data scientists and researchers. Procedures have been set up to minimize the effort of physicians directly involved in the care for COVID-19 patients during data collection and analysis. Hospitals can register here and read more about the support tools that have been developed by the consortium to help gathering data in a quick and easy manner. Research groups can also use this page to submit relevant research questions.
